Tredyffrin Public Library has been selected as the winner of the 2023 Alexandre Vattemare Award for Creativity in Libraries, in recognition of their “Remixed Classics” program, a “library-wide effort to engage patrons of all ages in reimagining classics using the lens of humanities.”
Our award jury had this to say about their entry:
“We’ve selected the Tredyffrin project because we love the structure, focus, process and the products teens can be proud of. We see this as a great project collaboration between library staff, young people, and knowledgeable adults, opening up further avenues for networking and connection between library staff and the town. The Remixed Classics program provides library workers with an opportunity to teach a broad range of literacies and connect with a broad range of age and interest groups through a wide range of expressive forms. The concept of remixing helps libraries find ways to help their communities see themselves in the materials that the library has on offer. We see the success of this project through the incredible programs it has inspired as well as the handbook developed by initiative members that can be used to continue the work and spread its ideas beyond the town. The Remixed Classics Scriptwriter’s Handbook feels incredibly rooted in the experiences and identities of community members, providing a way for libraries and library workers to promote agency within the communities they serve.”
Given annually by Library Juice Press, the Vattemare Award recognizes contributions in the LIS field that are marked by originality, creative energy, and novel combinations of ideas. The primary consideration in selecting the awardee is their creation of new possibilities for libraries and library workers.
The award consists of $1000 and a framed certificate.
